In Beauty May We Walk
A couple of weeks ago, I did something I look forward to every year — a 10K through the woods, across rivers, and along the muddy trails of a nature preserve close to our home.
My family are runners.
I am mostly a walker.
And honestly? I wouldn’t have it any other way.
Because for me, this event has become something entirely different from a race. It’s become a walk of reflection — a chance to slow down, take in the beauty around me, and simply be present in my body and in the moment (although I do walk at a pretty good clip!)
Before we start, the same poem is always read. It’s a blend of Native American Navajo and Irish blessing traditions — and every single time I hear it, something in me stills:
Beauty before me as I walk.
Beauty behind me as I walk.
Beauty below me, beauty above me,
Beauty beside me, beauty within me as I walk.
In beauty may we walk.
In beauty may we see.
In beauty may we all be.
Standing there in the woods, my family around me, I had the thought:
this is what health feels like when we get it right.
Not a checklist.
Not a box to tick.
Not punishment for what we ate or didn’t do.
But this — moving through beauty, breathing it in, fully alive and fully present.
And here’s what I want you to know:
That walk wasn’t just good for my soul.
It was profoundly good for my villagers.
You’ve heard me talk about the Villagers before — the billions of inhabitants living inside this massively intelligent ecosystem we call our body.
And what fascinates me is how much is happening inside us when we move through the world this way — when we’re not even thinking about it as “exercise.”
On that walk through the woods, my villagers were busy —
building energy, growing new neural pathways, dialing down inflammation, strengthening immunity… quietly doing what they’re designed to do when we give them the right conditions.
And here’s the one that stops me every time:
Awe and exposure to natural beauty are directly linked to reduced inflammation.
Beauty is literally anti-inflammatory.
The poem knew something science is only now catching up to.
And it’s not just the walk.
Every choice you make is a delivery to your villagers — shaping what thrives inside you.
The whole foods you choose over the processed ones.
The extra hour of sleep you protect instead of scrolling.
The ten minutes of stillness you carve out to quiet a nervous system that’s been humming all day.
The glass of water.
The moment you step outside and lift your face to the sun.
The dinner shared with people you love.
Your villagers are responding to all of it. Every single time.
This is what I mean when I say:
Health isn’t something you do to yourself.
It’s something you tend.
It’s stewardship of an entire inner world that is listening — and responding — to every choice you make.
Not perfectly.
Not all at once.
But consistently, and with intention.
You don’t have to run a 10K to deliver these goods to your villagers.
You just have to move.
To nourish.
To rest.
To notice.
To be present in your body — instead of just dragging it through your day.
So this week, I want to invite you to pick one small delivery to your villagers — something you can do today, without overthinking it - (And, don't worry, you don't have to get muddy doing it :))
Think …
A walk where you actually look up.
A meal built from real food.
An earlier bedtime.
Ten minutes of quiet.
Whatever feels most needed right now.
Because inside you, billions of remarkable inhabitants are responding to everything you give them.
They are waiting for your direction.
In beauty may we walk.
In beauty may we see.
In beauty may we all be.
That’s not just a blessing.
That’s a prescription.
