It’s Healthy to Change Your Mind

For years, “healthy” meant fat-free everything. Then it was low-carb. Then keto. Then fasting.

We were told to log endless miles of cardio for heart health.
Now we know that strength training is one of the most powerful tools we have for longevity.

And for me personally, fasting has been one of those areas I’ve had to rethink.

Many health professionals I respect promote longer fasts, and yes, there are powerful benefits. But for midlife bodies, the risk of muscle loss is real  - and that’s not a trade-off I’m willing to make.

So I reframed my approach: I now lean into something simple and sustainable - a 12-hour overnight fast, from dinner to breakfast.

No extremes. Just something that works for the long haul.

These kinds of shifts … this practice of reframing … show up everywhere.

In our health. In our relationships. In how we see the world.

Strong Bones Start Here

I’m hearing it more and more these days: women in their 40s, 50s, and 60s being told they have osteopenia or osteoporosis. Sometimes it’s discovered during a routine bone scan. Other times, it follows a small fall or fracture that shouldn’t have happened.

And the reaction is always the same — frustration, fear, and the question: “What can I do about it?”

Like most diagnoses we face, yes, it can be scary, but it can also be frustrating.  Sometimes that frustration turns inward.

We ask ourselves, what could I have done to prevent this?

But rather than obsessing about the past, it's time to think about the future - and figure out exactly what we can do, because …we are not powerless.

And probably a lot more resilient than we realize.

Our bodies really do have the capacity to change … with the right inputs … at any age.

And honestly, it's that agency we have - that sense of control - that is really exciting for all of us.

Bone density isn’t fixed. Muscle isn’t static. Our bodies respond to the right signals - no matter our age - and strength training is the single most powerful signal we can send.

The Strength You Need to Keep Doing What You Love

As a Healthy Aging Coach, I think a lot about what it takes to keep living in health … not just adding years to our life, but life to our years.

It’s not just about avoiding illness.

It’s about staying strong, energized, and capable, so we can keep doing the things we love, on our own terms.

 And I truly believe:

Focusing on getting stronger is one of the greatest gifts we can give ourselves.

That’s why I want to share this with you today:

I feel stronger at 62 than I did in my 40s (and that's a good feeling).

And not because I’m doing anything extreme, but because I finally got consistent about getting stronger.

Why does strength matter, more than we think?  Well, the biggie is:

Strength is the #1 predictor of independence as we age.

Longevity Game Changer: Your Mind

We all hear the terms “mindset” and “mindfulness” frequently.

Sometimes, it's easy to dismiss them, not fully tuning into what they mean.

You might even wonder—does mindfulness mean meditation? What do I need to do to be mindful?

If you think of the opposite of mindfulness, it’s mindlessness—going through life on autopilot, assuming you already know something and not paying attention.

Mindfulness, at its core, is simply being present and aware.

And awareness is the most important factor in making meaningful changes. When you’re mindful, you have more energy, more capacity, and more control over your actions.

The Gut’s Secret Society

I like to think of our body as a thriving village, filled with countless “villagers” who work around the clock to keep us alive, performing well, thinking clearly, feeling balanced, and—bottom line—healthy.

So if we think about our body as a haven for “villagers” that work hard to keep us healthy, we naturally can think of our mouth as the “golden gate” of entry into this village.

We certainly want to control what goes through that golden gate, so our villagers are getting everything they need to perform their jobs.  We want to give them the best tools to optimize their work environment.

Free Yourself from Inactivity

Freeing yourself from inactivity is imperative in our modern age, where sedentary habits have become ingrained in our daily routines.

Whether it's spending hours commuting, being chained to a desk and computer at work, or indulging in prolonged screen time, modern conveniences have inadvertently led us down this path.

The level of inactivity that most people experience every day is simply not conducive to good health.

As someone who also grapples with these challenges, I understand the struggle firsthand. Caught up in the demands of writing, researching, and meeting with clients, I often find myself glued to my desk for hours on end.

It's only when I finally push back and stand up that I feel the physical toll – stiff neck and shoulders, achy hips. Yet, amidst the pressure to maximize productivity, it's essential to recognize the sacrifice we make by neglecting our bodies.

Longevity Unveiled: Decoding the Science of Aging Backwards

Longevity. It’s not something we think too much about when we’re young.

In fact, when we’re young, we just want to get older. And when we’re “old,” we just want to be young again.

Those middle years creep up fast … and come with the realization that we’ve perhaps lived more than half our life.

So logically, at this point in time, the idea of longevity might be something that enters our brain a bit more frequently.

And really what we all want is to live as long as possible, in a way that feels good and healthy.

Unfortunately, reality is harsh. Aging is the biggest risk factor for every chronic disease.

The statistics are staggering - 80% of adults over sixty-five have one chronic disease, and 77% have two chronic diseases.

Age-Defying Optimism - Unveiling the Superpowers of a Positive Mindset

I just came back from a bucket list trip to Southern France, celebrating “SIXTY” with college friends for a week, and then “THIRTY-FIVE” years of marriage with my husband Mark.

Both momentous occasions, and so worthy of celebration. So grateful for my friends who got the ball rolling, which enabled me to step right into one of the best trips of my life.

Turning “60” … “50” … “40” or sometimes even “30” can come with some trepidation.

I think I’ve always felt that trepidation with every new decade.

When I look back at the past decades, each was defined by many different wonderful things, as well as challenges … all kind of unique to that state of age … but what was promising was the realization that life was continuing to deliver the goods.

When we think about getting older, many of us think of life as a bell curve. We are walking up to a precipice, and at some point, probably in mid-life, we reach the peak, and start walking down the other side.

Be Stronger than your Excuses

I love the way celebrity chef Seamus Mullen looks at the notion of health.

As a person struggling with Rheumatoid Arthritis who almost died in his thirties, he had to push away the perception that he was doomed by this disease.

He knew he could manage his illness better than what he was doing.

The starting point for him, in his words, was this:

“The first step to becoming a healthy person is believing you can be healthy.”

It’s Simple. Breathe through your Nose.

When breathing through our nose, our lungs are able to extract 20% more oxygen than if we breathed through our mouth. This can make a profound difference in our life, our health - and is a clear marker for longevity.

Mouth breathing, on the other hand, is tied to chronic ailments - like asthma, allergies, and anxiety. It increases inflammation in the body. It makes us more susceptible to periodontal disease and sleep apnea.
